About Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. For many, its biggest draw is the fact that members come from all walks of life and meet as equals whatever their race, religion or socio-economic position in society. For Freemasons, there are four important values that help define their path through life; Integrity, Respect, Friendship and Charity.

In today's world filled with uncertainty, these principles ring as true as they have at any point in the organisation's history.

  • Integrity: Rather than working on buildings like the masons of old, today’s Freemasons focus on building themselves as people of integrity, and membership provides the structure to help achieve that goal.

  • Respect: With a membership of more than 150,000 people drawn from communities across the UK, Freemasonry brings people together irrespective of their race, religion or any other perceived differences that can divide us as a society.

  • Friendship: One of the oldest social organisations in the world, Freemasonry is not defined by an ideology. It is open to people from all religions and political persuasions and provides the common foundation for friendships between members, many of which will last for life.

  • Service: Whether participating in events, fundraising for a charitable cause or volunteering for public or community organisations, service is at the very heart of Freemasonry. Our members make valuable contributions by donating time, resources and skills. â€‹

A Freemason's duties are first to his God, then, without detriment to his family and those dependent upon him, to his fellow men. A freemason's duty as a citizen must always come first and it is a serious disqualification to attempt to use membership of the order to promote one's own or anyone else's personal interests. More information on Freemasonry may be found at the website of the United Grand Lodge of England.

About Rowena

The Lodge currently has 25 members of varying age, ethnicity and religion. We pride ourselves on our dedication to the Lodge moto 'Nihil Sine Labore' or 'Nothing Without Labour'. Freemasons Lodge meetings rely heavily on ritual that is committed to memory through a dedication to learning. Putting in the hard work to learn and memorise our ceremonies is realized through delivering ritual to high standard in our Lodge meetings.

But, its not all about hard work. We also have a reputation for being and extremely welcoming and fun Lodge. After our Lodge meetings we sit down for dinner (which Masons refer to as a Festive Board). This part of our evening is where we socialize and enjoy each other's company. We also regularly organise social evenings and events that are attended by Masons, our family members and friends.

All of our members recognise the need be charitable and here at Rowena, we have always and will continue to give to both Masonic and non-Masonic local and National Charities. Our most recent donation however, was an international donation to support the displaced families in the war in the Ukraine.

Our collective goal is to improve ourselves everyday, maintain and uphold strong and honourable morals and show compassion to those in a time of need.
